These trick wooden puzzle boxes originated during the Edo period in Japan. They were originally designed to transport secret messages. Yosegi-zaiku is a type of Japanese parquetry where artisans created patterns with small inlaid pieces of wood to create a veneer of intricate patterns. Each box is constructed without the use of nails, and are fitted together in such a way that it takes from 2 to dozens of moves to open a box.
This box involves 10 moves and measures 4"L x 3"W x 2"H.
