By Sadao Ito. Translated from Japanese by Grady Martin.
This charming story of the Japanese Friendship Doll Exchange of 1927, initiated by Dr. Sidney Gulick, is related by the author whose mother was one of the children who experienced this great exchange as a young girl. 12,000 Blue-eyed dolls were sent by the children of America to elementary schools throughout Japan to promote friendship and a mutual cultural appreciation between children of both countries. In response to the Blue-eyed dolls, Japan sent 58 elaborate life-sized girl dolls to the United States, accompanied by clothing and accessories of Japanese life. Text is in Japanese and English.
