In 1942, 15-year-old Ruth Mix began volunteering on weekends at the Gila River Japanese American concentration camp and was the only Caucasian nurse's aide in Butte camp hospital. Her mother, Frida Mix, worked as an elementary school teacher at the same camp. During the summer months, Ruth volunteered full time and lived on site in a barrack with her mother.
