Collection: Hinamatsuri

Hinamatsuri (Festival of Dolls) is also known as Girls’ Day and is celebrated in Japan on March 3. Families with girls celebrate by displaying a set of hina dolls that represent an Imperial family. These sets can consist of just the Emperor and Empress dolls, or represent an entire court of fifteen dolls including warriors, handmaidens, musicians, and other servants. Some hina doll sets come with elaborate displays of orange and peach trees, lacquered furniture and dishes, lanterns, instruments, and palanquins. The dolls are meant to bring good luck and health to the girls in the household. The length of time that a display remains up can be as short as a few days to an entire month, but one superstition is that if you leave it up too long, it will mean that the girls in the family will not get married!
