Ema-The Ox appears on a traditional votive plaque called an ema, which translates into 'picture horse'. In ancient Japan, horses were sometimes given as offerings to Shinto shrines. Later pictures of horses on a stable-shaped piece of wood were substituted as symbolic offerings.
