Koinobori or carp are the most spirited of fish, fighting their way up swift-running rivers. This quality makes them the ideal symbol of courage and  determination that has associated them with Boys Day (Tango no Sekku).  May 5 is now designated as Children's Day, and courage and determination  can be emulated by boys and girls!
