About 10 million paper cranes are sent to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park annually from around the world, imbued with prayers for peace from those who folded them. Now these cranes are being recycled into origami paper that you can buy. Each time this special paper is folded into a paper crane, the hopes and prayers of all those who folded it before intermingle and multiply.
Paper cranes have been a symbol of peace since Sadako Sasaki, a young atomic bomb victim, folded over 1,000 of them before her death from leukemia at the age of 12 in 1955. One of Sadako’s original cranes is now a part of JANM’s permanent collection.
