Unlike yurei (who are ghosts of the deceased) yokai are earthly monsters which can take the form of animals, humans, or inanimate objects. Yokai are a common theme in Japanese art. This book is a visual collection of yokai art during the Edo period (1603-1868). All items featured in the book come from the personal collection of Koichi Yumoto, who has the largest yokai art collection in Japan. The works range from paintings to wood block prints, ceramics, kimonos, children’s playthings such as board games, and more.
