Item # 222017-S.
This is a reprise/update of a shirt we produced in 2009, just after the collapse of the economy and the beginning of the Great Recession. We have been asked to remind people that we can all be strong in the face of adversity.
"Gaman" mean to persevere and endure adversity with inner strength. It is an expression of a concept that is synonymous with the Japanese American spirit during a time of extraordinary upheaval and uncertainty: the forced incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans in concentration camps during World War II. It is a cultural value that was passed from the Issei to the Nisei but perhaps has never been clearly understood by subsequent generations.
Today, in our own uncertain times, we can all gain a bit of strength by internalizing the same powerful message (tempered with a bit of humor!). This soft, heather charcoal, 60/40 cotton/poly blend shirt has GAMAN on a background of caution-sign yellow, and the JANM logo on the sleeve. A vintage look for an age-old concept. Adult sizes S, M, L, XL, 2XL
