Sugar/Islands: Finding Okinawa in Hawai’i—The Art of Laura Kina and Emily Hanako Momohara

Curated by Krystal Hauseur.

The rich paintings by Laura Kina and haunting photographs by Emily Hanako Momohara illustrate a unique examination of worker migration and settlement from the islands of Okinawa to the islands of Hawai‘i. These early immigrants sought opportunities afforded by the sugar plantations and pineapple farms during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Includes all 30 works of art from the exhibition in full color, plus essays from Asian American Art educators Krystal Hauseur and Margo Machida.
