Shop, Share and Support! Since assuming the role of President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Museum last year, implementing our important mission of preserving and sharing the history of Japanese Americans while building and growing our revenue streams in these harsh economic times, has been one of my greatest challenges. Fortunately, our Museum Store provides us with the perfect vehicle for doing both. Through curating the variety of products sold in our store—from clothing, jewelry, note cards, videos and books—we interpret and share the art, history and culture of Japanese Americans. Not only do we offer one-of-a-kind artwork in the store, such as Joel Nakamura’s custom kokeshi and Carol Misumi’s handmade kasuri vest, we also create new products like our Courtyard Kaeru items and kokeshi jewelry, that reflect our mission and can be sold to support the Museum. Once more, our programming this year created opportunities for interesting store merchandise. Look for product related to Kokeshi: From Folk Art to Art Toy, our second Mike Shinoda show, Glorious Excess (Dies), and Textured Lives: Japanese Immigrant Clothing from the Plantations of Hawai‘i, which opens February 27, 2010. I want to thank all the customers who shop at the Museum Store in our Pavilion and at our Museum Store online. Please keep in mind that each time you purchase items from our store, you are sharing our stories and providing the financial means to accomplish our mission. Sincerely, Akemi Kikumura Yano President and CEO | |
