Catalog 2008-2009

Shop, Share and Support!

I may be new to the position of President and CEO, but as a longtime loyal customer of our award-winning Museum Store I know that here I can always find unique and fun gifts that also express and teach about our cultural pride and heritage. And not only can I find the staples of Japanese American history and culture, I've also found the Museum Store to be a reliable source of what’s new and innovative in products that reflect the Japanese influence in contemporary design both in America and in Japan.

The Store catalog reflects the work we do here at the Museum throughout the year. This year’s products mirror our recent exhibitions and major programs (Living Flowers: Ikebana and Contemporary Art and the Enduring Communities Project) and upcoming exhibitions (Glorious Excess (Dies): Paintings by Mike Shinoda, Textured Lives: Japanese Immigrant Clothing from the Plantations of Hawai‘i, and Kokeshi: From Folk Art to Art Toy). We are pleased to offer new books by Allen Say, Naomi Hirahara, David Mura, and Joanne Oppenheim that address a variety of Japanese American subjects and themes.

For newer generations of Japanese Americans, we offer graphic novels by Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, Adrian Tomine (who was in the Giant Robot Biennale here in 2007), and R. Kikuo Johnson, all of whom tell a new kind of JA story.

Finally, I want to encourage everyone to visit our Museum Store or to shop online. When you give these and other gifts from the Museum Store, you not only support the Museum by providing program-sustaining revenue, but you also share and spread the mission of the Museum to your friends, to your families, and to brand new audiences.

Sincerely,
Akemi Kikumura Yano
President and CEO
