A nisei born in New York City and raised in Boulder, Colorado, Kasahara has been using Japanese iconic imagery in her work off and on since 2002. Her paintings appeared in Kokeshi: From Folk Art to Art Toy at the Museum (2009). Kokeshi have significance as representative of self-portraiture or as a stand-in for Japanese or Asian women in general. Her paintings are explorations of identity, combining memory, autobiographical experiences, and observations into personal and contemporary contexts.
