AKA Emi M, Motokawa was botn in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to the U.S. at the age of seven. Her painting work has been described as "Pop Spiritual Bliss", incorporating her belief in Buddhist concepts into her work. She uses "big-eyed" characters because she believes the eyes are the window to the soul. Her Krokeshi sculptures were part of the exhibition, Kokeshi: From Folk Art to Art Toy at the Museum (2009)
