Enduring Communities was a multi-year (2006-2009) partnership project with the Japanese American National Museum and its five partners: Arizona State University’s Asian Pacific American Studies Program; University of Colorado, Boulder; University of New Mexico; UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures; and Davis School District, Utah.

This collaborative effort with educators, communities, and students resulted in a national conference, a Field Guide to Collaboration, and new curricula about the Japanese American World War II experience for classrooms in these five states.

“Whose America? Who’s American?” Diversity, Civil Liberties, and Social Justice National Conference Highlights (6:00) This shows highlights from the national conference that took place in Denver, Colorado in July 2008. (See clip)



Trip to Amache (9:00) Hundreds of people take an emotional journey to Amache, the former World War II concentration camp in Colorado.

Speech by Federico Peña (25:00) Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Federico Peña reflects on the American Dream.

National Institute for Educators (9:30) Teachers from across the nation participate in a multiyear curriculum development program, sponsored by the Japanese American National Museum.

Clean Up at Gila River (6:40) Middle school students from Arizona assist Mr. Masaji Inoshita, a World War II veteran and former Gila River concentration camp inmate, in cleaning up the defaced camp monument.
