"Gaman" mean to persevere and endure adversity with inner strength. It is an expression of a concept that is synonymous with the Japanese American spirit during a time of extraordinary upheaval and uncertainty: the forced incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans in concentration camps during World War II. It is a cultural value that was passed from the Issei to the Nisei but perhaps has never been clearly understood by subsequent generations.
Today, in our own turbulent era, we can all gain a bit of strength by internalizing the same powerful message (tempered with a bit of humor!).
