Sgt. Fred Murano and his three boyhood friends belong to the tough 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team, the most decorated in US history. Known as the four foxes, they are experts at knocking out the feared German machine gun nests. They survive as a foursome in the battlefields of Italy until the all-Nisei segregated regiment is transferred to France. In one of the epic battles of WWII in Europe, the unit is decimated while rescuing the Lost Battalion of Texas.
In the aftermath, Fred stands alone among the eight men left in I Company. Shipped back to Italy in secrecy, the regiment cracks the Gothic Line in a surprise dawn raid - in 30 minutes. The German defenses that had withstood five months of sustained Allied pounding wither. But without his team Sgt. Murano is helpless against the M-42 machine guns. Though shattered by gunfire, he survives - only to confront another form of Death later.
