Drifting Toward the Southeast: The Story of Five Japanese Castaways
Translation by Junya Nagakuni and Junji Kitadai.
This is the first complete English language edition of Hyoson Kiryaku – the official autobiographical account of John Manjiro’s historic voyage to the United States as told to the officials of the Shogunate in 1852.
Of the nine existent copies of this historical work, the translators have drawn heavily on the copy at the Rosenbach Library in Philadelphia which was included in the Drifting: Nakahama Manjiro’s Tale of Discovery. An Illustrated Manuscript Recounting Ten Years of Adventure at Sea exhibition which was at the National Museum in the Fall of 2003.
Included in the translation are color reproductions of the paintings by the artist and official transcriber Shoryo, as well as illustrations by Manjiro and detailed maps documenting the journey. Paper: 160 pp.
